Where do tours depart from?
Our standard departure point is outside the Dunedin i‑SITE Visitor Information Centre, 50 The Octagon, Central Dunedin. This is the primary meeting point for all scheduled Wild One Tours.
Are alternative pick‑ups available?
Yes, with prior arrangement.
- Alternative pick‑ups may be available on the Otago Peninsula near Portobello, subject to confirmation.
- Port Chalmers cruise terminal pick‑ups are not available for scheduled tours.
- Central Dunedin accommodation pick‑ups may be arranged, subject to availability.
All alternative arrangements must be confirmed at least 12 hours before departure. Pick‑up details are confirmed in writing and must be checked carefully by guests.
What time should I arrive?
Guests must be waiting at least 10 minutes prior to their scheduled tour time. Tours depart precisely on time and late arrivals may not be able to join the tour. Guests are encouraged to contact Clearwater Wildlife Tours immediately if running late.
Is parking available near the departure point?
Yes. The recommended parking option is:

How long is the tour and are food stops included?
Duration: Approximately 4 hours
Food: There are no food stops during the tour. Guests may bring pre‑packed food and drinks. Water and light refreshments (cookies) are provided on tour.
Are toilet facilities available?
Yes. Toilets are available near the Octagon departure point. Toilets are also available at the Clearwater Family Farm.
What level of fitness is required?
The Wild One Tour requires a reasonable level of fitness and mobility and is not suitable for:
- Guests with limited mobility or fitness concerns
- Wheelchairs or mobility aids
- Prams or strollers
- Children under 5 years of age
Tour conditions include:
- Walking approximately 1.5 km
- Steep hills and steps
- Uneven terrain and beach walking

What clothing and footwear are required?
As an outdoor wildlife experience, guests must be prepared for changing weather conditions.
Clothing: Warm layers (even in summer). Waterproof outer layers. Clearwater Wildlife Tours supplies windproof and waterproof jackets.
Footwear: Sturdy walking shoes or boots with good tread are required.
Are there any medical considerations?
Guests should carry any personal medications they require. Guests should inform their guide of and any medical conditions or Injuries or illness that may affect participation. All guides are first‑aid trained, and guest wellbeing is prioritised.
What wildlife may be seen on tour?
The Clearwater Family Farm and conservation area is recognised as one of Dunedin’s richest wildlife areas. Species commonly encountered may include:
- Yellow‑eyed penguins (Hoiho) – the rarest penguin species in the world
- New Zealand sea lions – the rarest sea lion species globally
- New Zealand fur seals and pups
- Albatross and a wide variety of seabirds
- Native and endemic wetland and coastal birdlife
Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, as animals are free‑roaming in a natural environment.
How are wildlife interactions managed?
Clearwater Wildlife Tours operates a strict wildlife‑first and conservation‑led
approach to tour operations.
- Viewing hides and pathways are designed to minimise disturbance.
- Guests observe wildlife from safe, respectful distances.
- Guides are trained in wildlife protocols and conservation.

Is photography allowed?
Yes, photography is highly encouraged and each tour provides excellent
opportunities for wildlife, landscape, and coastal photography. Flash photography at close range is not permitted. High‑quality binoculars are provided for every guest.
